Fans might be sick of such descriptions, considering similar phrases were also applied in two of the past three seasons—in 2020, when the franchise relocated to town, and 2022, with the arrival of new coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler. But the player personnel stayed relatively steady, at least at the top, throughout those transitions.
The franchise tried to build a contender around longtime quarterback Derek Carr and players mostly drafted or acquired by coach Jon Gruden’s regime. That’s no longer the plan after a disappointing 6-11 season last year.
McDaniels benched Carr late last season, and then Ziegler released the quarterback in March after nine seasons with the team. Carr wasn’t the only player purged; Ziegler and McDaniels made a conscious effort to overhaul much of the roster and bring in their own players while getting younger.
Both men have been careful not to use the phrase “rebuild,” but at the very least, the 2023 season is a restructuring. With as many as 10 new starters, this is the most different the Raiders have looked since moving to Las Vegas.
