POINT: With destinations like the Mob Museum, Smith Center and First Friday, I’m all for our youth exploring the city’s core. But when it comes to curfew proposals that will affect the Fremont East area, I’m also all for kids going home early. There’s no good reason for them to stand in front of taverns during prime barhopping hours, yet every First Friday they’re there, usually being as offensive as the Mickey’s they’re drinking. The Las Vegas City Council should consider cultural offerings such as First Friday when deciding on this issue, but should also keep in mind that nothing but bar menus can be learned from a jaunt on Fremont East past 9 p.m. Let the kids discover Downtown when it’s appropriate to do so. –Mark Adams

COUNTERPOINT: Underage drinking is a problem, but it’s also nothing new. Enforcing a curfew as early as 9 p.m. will just force minors elsewhere, including those who use Downtown facilities for positive reasons. And while the neighborhood is a current hot spot, it’s also home to a lot of kids who come from marginalized communities. And what about minors who regularly work past 9 p.m., or those who use resources that keep them off the streets—like the Center? The curfew also misses most underage drinkers—legal adults between the ages of 18 and 20. In a city that’s already one giant adult playground, are today’s youth actually welcome anywhere? –Leslie Ventura
