Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi
Rome
Two and a half stars

Who out there hasn’t been hoping the Gnarls Barkley guy who mashed Jay-Z with The Beatles and the Italian dude who scored Hell Ride would join forces, enlist the voices of, say, Jack White and Norah Jones, and record a soundtrack to … nothing? Okay, me neither, but now that it’s happened, Rome is obviously gonna shake up the world, right? ’Cause, hey, Danger Mouse and Jack White. And did I mention the Italian dude who scored Hell Ride? Badass, man! Okay, not really. The music is perfectly pleasant but also perfectly punchless, the sort of stuff destined to drift beneath the chatter of brick-walled bistros. Just don’t expect anyone to ask the waiter to see the CD jacket. Okay, except for that one guy trying to impress his date. Excuse me, but would that happen to be the Italian dude who scored Hell Ride?
